Summary

Nancy, Bess and George, returning from a country carnival, witness the malicious burning of a stately home。 Fearing its occupants might be trapped in the fire, they rush to the rescue。 Other motorists including handsome, Ned Nickerson, are also at the scene。 Nancy notices a mysterious man running from the fire and finds a lost diary。 Nancy learns the homeowner and the man who kept the diary are involved in a business transaction in which the latter was cheated。 Despite strong evidence to the contrary, Nancy is convinced of this prime suspect's innocence。 While working to exonerate the troubled man, Nancy is delighted by her new friendship with Ned。 This book is the revised text。 The plot of the original story (©1932) is similar with a major and some minor revisions。

At what point does it become interfere in a police investigation? Withholding evidence? And then there’s Nancy’s WASPish savior complex。 But gosh I still admire the fantasy of it all—police and other older male authority figures all having to take direction from a teenage girl when she figures out problems ahead of them。 Despite all the book’s faults, that fantasy still appeals。

A standard mystery for Nancy, but this entry introduces Ned Nickerson who became Nancy's long-running boyfriend for the rest of the original run of novels。 Excellent entry point for new readers。Find it! This one just wrapped up so conveniently, even for this series。

Yes, the books are seriously dated (eating luncheon daily?) but I still love them for the sake of nostalgia。 And reading this one made me understand something about the MC in most cozy mysteries of today。。。 they clearly all read Nancy Drew as well。 The fact that Nancy held onto a vital piece of evidence, keeping it from the police, with the knowledge of her lawyer father, with no repercussions at all。。。 sounds vaguely familiar。 And this is where we meet Ned Nickerson, which was a treat。 Thanks f Yes, the books are seriously dated (eating luncheon daily?) but I still love them for the sake of nostalgia。 And reading this one made me understand something about the MC in most cozy mysteries of today。。。 they clearly all read Nancy Drew as well。 The fact that Nancy held onto a vital piece of evidence, keeping it from the police, with the knowledge of her lawyer father, with no repercussions at all。。。 sounds vaguely familiar。 And this is where we meet Ned Nickerson, which was a treat。 Thanks for the memories, Nancy。 。。。more

A great read! The plot was riveting, the side characters were enjoyable, and I was thrilled to see the introduction of Ned finally!

Fun Fact: Nancy meets Ned in this book。 :)。

The characters were complex with understandable motivations, and had their own flaws, making them human。

Perfect nostalgic read!! The gang's all here。 We finally meet Ned in this one。 This is everything that I love about Nancy Drew -- the cliffhanger endings, Nancy actively solving the case, and Bess, George, and Ned are all here to help out。 So much fun!!1 Perfect nostalgic read!! Nancy and friends, Bess and George witness the explosion and burning of a mansion。 The only clues are a man fleeing the scene and a dropped diary。 This is where we get the formal introduction of Ned Nickerson。 He has a key role in solving the mystery as well!

Full star for just the audiobook narrator trying to do a Swedish accent。

Ok I can't get past this line given by one of the cops that arrested the innocent man, "his story may be on the level, but he'll have to prove it。" Ummmm noo。 It's not guilty until proven innocent, its the other way around and a cop would know that。 No good lawyer would charge the man on such a lack of evidence which seemed to include nothing more than one hysterical woman's accusations。 Touchy subject in this country right now where everybody is fast to judge on social media so it's too hard fo Ok I can't get past this line given by one of the cops that arrested the innocent man, "his story may be on the level, but he'll have to prove it。" Ummmm noo。 It's not guilty until proven innocent, its the other way around and a cop would know that。 No good lawyer would charge the man on such a lack of evidence which seemed to include nothing more than one hysterical woman's accusations。 Touchy subject in this country right now where everybody is fast to judge on social media so it's too hard for me to ignore this even though its only 1 line。 I'm sure it's not intentional, these stories are obviously very simple, but I maintain that an author in the United States writing characters that live in the United States should not have written that line and it bugs me。 。。。more

First meeting of Ned Nickerson and Nancy Drew。 In first few chapters, we can guess the whole story, its all about searching Raybolt。 Introducing Swensons' added little twist, but mystery unraveled pretty fast。 Its pretty much straight forward plot, where everyone either try to guess or make excuses。 If you want to check out how Nancy meets Ned , read the story or else skip the book。 I don't understand why they named this book "Clue in a diary", Diary is hardly a clue, which Mr Swensons can't tel First meeting of Ned Nickerson and Nancy Drew。 In first few chapters, we can guess the whole story, its all about searching Raybolt。 Introducing Swensons' added little twist, but mystery unraveled pretty fast。 Its pretty much straight forward plot, where everyone either try to guess or make excuses。 If you want to check out how Nancy meets Ned , read the story or else skip the book。 I don't understand why they named this book "Clue in a diary", Diary is hardly a clue, which Mr Swensons can't tell Nancy by himself and clue doesn't gives Nancy any lead to solve the mystery。 。。。more

Another Nancy Drew mystery solved! This mystery starts off right away instead of a chapter or two of build-up like the previous six books do。As usual, Nancy is drawn to a seemingly ordinary problem by one little clue that keeps building from the beginning of the story to end of it。She has help along the way; her friends George and Bess, housekeeper Hannah Gruen, father Carson Drew and new-comer Ned Nickerson。With their help, Nancy is able to solve the mystery and get out of a jam or two herself。

Wow, it was such a refreshing experience to read a good Nancy Drew mystery。 This one has its interesting points! 。。。 There's a diary written in Swedish, an inventor's house that suddenly blew up in flames 。。。 and a little girl that catches the heart of Nancy and her friends (their kindness towards the girl and her mother is unbelievable)。 This makes me excited to read another Nancy book sometime。 Wow, it was such a refreshing experience to read a good Nancy Drew mystery。 This one has its interesting points! 。。。 There's a diary written in Swedish, an inventor's house that suddenly blew up in flames 。。。 and a little girl that catches the heart of Nancy and her friends (their kindness towards the girl and her mother is unbelievable)。 This makes me excited to read another Nancy book sometime。 。。。more

I read all the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy books my grammy had while my mom and I were staying at her house in New Hampshire in 1989。 It was over the summer between 3rd and 4th grade (so each of these will be marked as read in July, though some of them were probably read in June and August as well)。 As an adult, I don't remember much about them other than I was unable to put each book down until I finished it。 Even in 1989, this was a fantastic series。 As an frequent reader of YA, I'm tempted to pi I read all the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy books my grammy had while my mom and I were staying at her house in New Hampshire in 1989。 It was over the summer between 3rd and 4th grade (so each of these will be marked as read in July, though some of them were probably read in June and August as well)。 As an adult, I don't remember much about them other than I was unable to put each book down until I finished it。 Even in 1989, this was a fantastic series。 As an frequent reader of YA, I'm tempted to pick one of these up again to see if it holds up。 。。。more
